How Often Should You Really Get a Haircut?

The Honest Answer

If you ask ten different stylists how often you should get a haircut, you will likely get ten different answers. The generic advice of "every six to eight weeks" that you see everywhere is not wrong, but it is far too simplistic. The real answer depends on your hair type, your current style, your hair goals, and the amount of damage your hair is dealing with. Let us break it down properly.

By Hair Type and Style

Short styles (pixie cuts, bobs, fades): Every 4-6 weeks. Short hairstyles lose their shape quickly. A pixie cut that looked sharp and intentional at week three can look shaggy and unkempt by week six. If your style has precise lines or layers, staying on a strict schedule is important.

Medium-length styles (shoulder to mid-back): Every 6-8 weeks. Medium-length hair is more forgiving as it grows out, but regular trims keep the ends healthy and the layers defined. If you have face-framing layers, these will need attention more frequently as they frame your features and are the most visible part of your cut.

Long hair (below mid-back): Every 8-12 weeks for maintenance trims. If you are growing your hair out, you do not need to cut it frequently — but you do need to trim the ends to prevent split ends from travelling up the shaft and causing breakage that actually slows your growth. A half-inch trim every ten weeks keeps length while maintaining health.

Curly and coily hair: Every 8-12 weeks. Curly hair naturally conceals split ends better than straight hair because of its texture. Additionally, curly hair shrinks when cut, so cuts need to be done by someone who understands curl patterns and knows how to cut for shape when dry. Cutting curly hair too frequently can lead to losing length unnecessarily.

Signs You Need a Cut (Regardless of Schedule)

Sometimes your hair tells you it needs attention before your scheduled appointment. Watch for these signs:

  • Visible split ends: Hold a section of hair up to the light. If you can see the ends splitting into two or three forks, it is time for a trim.
  • Tangling and knotting: When the ends feel thin, rough, and tangle easily — especially after washing — the cuticle is damaged and needs to be cut away.
  • Lost shape: Your layers have grown out, your bangs are in your eyes, or your bob has lost its clean line. A style that no longer looks intentional needs refreshing.
  • Extended drying time: If blow-drying suddenly takes much longer than usual, your ends may be porous and damaged, absorbing excess water. A trim restores uniform porosity.
  • Flat, lifeless appearance: Overgrown layers and heavy ends weigh hair down. A fresh cut restores movement, bounce, and volume.

What About Hair Growth?

There is a common misconception that frequent haircuts make your hair grow faster. They do not. Hair grows from the root at a genetically determined rate of roughly half an inch per month. What regular trims do is prevent breakage, which means you retain more of that growth. Think of it as protecting what you have rather than generating more.

The Bottom Line

Rather than following a rigid schedule, learn to read your hair. Get familiar with how your specific hair type and style ages over time, and book your appointments based on what your hair actually needs. Our stylists are always happy to help you determine the right maintenance schedule during your next visit.
